Senate Rejects CLARITY Act, Crypto Prices Plummet
The US Senate's rejection of the CLARITY Act has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin prices plummeting by 2.8% to around $75,800 over the last 24 hours.
The bill, which sought to formally delineate jurisdictional boundaries between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), failed to overcome a filibuster with a 49-50 vote, falling short of the required 60-vote threshold.
Shares of digital ecosystem firms such as Coinbase and Circle also declined immediately following the Senate's decision, with Coinbase shares dropping by nearly 9% and Circle falling 9.4% by the close of trading.
The failure of the CLARITY Act prolongs legal ambiguity for domestic market operators, according to trade association representatives, who noted that the lack of consensus on Capitol Hill diminishes incentives to maintain technological infrastructure within US jurisdiction.
