Senate Rejects Comprehensive Crypto Legislation in Major Blow to Industry
The U.S. Senate failed to advance comprehensive cryptocurrency legislation known as the Clarity Act on Tuesday, dealing a significant blow to the industry.
The bill, which aimed to create a regulatory framework for digital assets, fell short of the required 60 votes by 10, with four Republican senators joining all Democrats in voting against it. The vote was 50-49 in favor.
President Donald Trump had urged Congress to pass the bill, which he saw as crucial for putting crypto companies on a more solid legal footing. Despite his support and the deep-pocketed industry's efforts, which included spending hundreds of millions of dollars campaigning for its passage, opponents remained unconvinced.
The vote effectively puts the bill on ice ahead of the November midterm elections, with Congress set to depart Washington this month. Industry experts have warned that without legislation, regulations will be vulnerable to shifting political climates and court challenges, creating hazards for the crypto industry.
