Senate Report Links Tether's USDT to Iran-Linked Financial Activity
A U.S. Senate investigation has found that Tether's USDT stablecoin plays a central role in Iran-linked financial activity, including suspected terrorism financing.
The report, led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, analyzed blockchain transaction data from 846 sanctioned or blocked crypto wallets tied to Iran and discovered that 87% of 757 implicated wallets predominantly transacted in USDT.
The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations claims Tether has repeatedly failed to freeze and block wallets linked to illicit activity, despite public indicators suggesting ties to terrorism financing.
Tether disputes these findings, stating it has frozen $550 million in USDT linked to Iran over the past year and asserts that it acts on law enforcement requests based on public blockchain data.
