Senate Votes Loom on Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Investment Row
The US Senate is set to vote on a cryptocurrency regulation bill that could provide legal certainty for crypto firms and protect consumers. However, Democrats are pushing back on the bill due to concerns over President Donald Trump's investments in the sector.
Trump has amassed significant profits from his involvement in various crypto businesses, including World Liberty Financial, a firm co-founded with Steve Witkoff. The president reported more than $500 million in revenue from the company's sales of governance tokens last year.
Senate Democrats are demanding stronger ethics safeguards to prevent Trump and his family from profiting from their investments while in office. They argue that the current bill does not go far enough to address these concerns.
Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, a lead sponsor of the bill, says that opposing the legislation would mean 'opposing real ethics reforms on politicians' personal investments' and handing American leadership in digital assets to foreign competitors.
