Seniors Fall Prey to Crypto Kiosk Scams as Florida Introduces New Protections

Share

As more Americans explore digital currency, scammers have turned their attention to seniors. Cryptocurrency has legitimate uses but also serves as a preferred tool for criminals.

Crypto kiosks are machines similar to ATMs that allow users to buy cryptocurrency with cash. They offer convenience but carry significant risks, including transaction fees of 10 percent to 30 percent or more and limited consumer protections.

Unlike traditional bank or credit card transactions, cryptocurrency transfers are irreversible. This makes crypto kiosks a favorite tool of scammers who convince victims to withdraw cash and deposit it into the machine by claiming they must 'protect' their bank account, pay taxes or fees, verify an account or claim a prize.

Florida enacted Florida Bill 505 in response to this growing threat. The law increases oversight, requires stronger consumer disclosures, and provides additional tools for law enforcement to investigate kiosk-related fraud.
