September Sees Record Crypto Hacks Totaling Over $766 Million
Crypto suffered its worst month of 2026 in September, with over $766 million lost to hacks. According to PeckShield and CertiK, two firms tracking security incidents, 55 major hacks occurred during the month, resulting in losses of around $766.5 million and $768.4 million respectively.
The largest hack was at Bitget, where an attacker gained access through compromised third-party security software, stealing approximately $387.5 million from hot and warm wallets across various networks. In a rare twist, the attacker behind the Liquid Network exploit returned 3,400 BTC after withdrawing close to 4,000 real BTC.
CertiK's report highlights that September was the costliest month of 2026 so far, with $768.4 million in losses across 97 incidents. The firm also notes that smaller hacks added millions to the total, with Safe Wallet suffering an estimated $7.8 million incident and DCENT and Duelbits recording losses of around $6 million and $5.9 million respectively.
