Sheriffs' Association Ditches Opposition to Crypto Regulation Bill

The National Sheriffs' Association has reversed its stance on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, switching from opposition to neutral. In a letter to Senate leaders, NSA President Sheriff Troy Wellman and Executive Director Justin Smith explained that the association believes the legislative process should proceed without their input, allowing for a clear regulatory framework to be established.

The NSA's change of heart comes after the White House invited law enforcement organizations to meet and discuss concerns over the bill. The association had previously warned that section 604 would grant mixers, tumblers, and DeFi platforms an 'exemption' from anti-money laundering rules, enabling them to launder money, finance terrorism, and evade sanctions.

The shift in position has been met with a mixture of reactions. Summer Mersinger, CEO of the Blockchain Association, argued that the NSA's opposition was misplaced, calling the bill 'the most important consumer protection effort in years'. However, with the NSA now neutral, one of the bill's most vocal critics has been removed ahead of a September vote.
