$SHIB Marks Six Years Since Launch: A Journey of Highs and Lows
$SHIB has come a long way since its launch on August 1, 2020. The token was created by an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi, who minted 1 quadrillion tokens and locked half in a Uniswap pool while sending the other half to Vitalik Buterin's wallet.
Ryoshi's goal was to create a decentralized experiment with no insider control over the community. The project billed itself as a 'Dogecoin killer' and attracted a large following, known as the ShibArmy. In its first year, $SHIB traded at prices with nine zeros after the decimal point.
The turning point came in May 2021 when Buterin donated 50 trillion $SHIB to charity and burned 410.24 trillion tokens, making it the largest single burn in crypto history. This event significantly reduced the token's supply and sent its price soaring.
$SHIB continued to grow, with listings on major exchanges like Binance and Coinbase, as well as the launch of its own decentralized exchange (DEX) called ShibaSwap. However, the project faced several challenges, including a bridge hack in 2025 that compromised $2.4 million worth of assets.
