Shiba Inu Builds Shibarium to Escape Ethereum's Limitations
The Shiba Inu project has been expanding rapidly since its launch in August 2020 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Initially, it was created as a tongue-in-cheek Dogecoin alternative by the pseudonymous Ryoshi.
However, being built on Ethereum brought its own set of limitations. High gas fees and limited transaction throughput made frequent small transactions impractical for holders, especially during periods of network congestion.
By 2021, the project had grown beyond a simple meme token, with the launch of ShibaSwap, a decentralized exchange, and companion tokens LEASH and BONE. This growth created a strategic problem: Ethereum's limitations couldn't be fixed on its own.
Shibarium, a Layer-2 scaling solution, was built to address these issues. It processes transactions faster and cheaper than the Ethereum mainnet while still settling back to Ethereum for security. Shibarium follows a common industry design pattern, scaling a base layer without abandoning its underlying security.
The Shibarium network has already processed over 1 billion lifetime transactions by 2026, a scale that would have been difficult to achieve cost-effectively on Ethereum mainnet alone. This infrastructure gave the team room to keep expanding technically without permanently competing for Ethereum mainnet's limited block space.
