Shiba Inu Regulatory Wins Fail to Move the Needle
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is one of the rare exceptions among meme coins, still recognizable after launching in 2020 and peaking in 2021. Despite trending down since early 2025, its price has increased 21% over the last month as of September 18.
The cryptocurrency received regulatory wins on both sides of the Atlantic. In March, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) classified it as a digital commodity, removing the risk of lawsuits for listing or holding an unregistered security. This opens the door to crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) potentially including Shiba Inu.
T. Rowe Price has filed with the SEC for permission to launch an active crypto ETF that would hold cryptocurrencies fitting its definition of eligible assets, and Shiba Inu makes this list alongside Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP among others. Japan's regulatory Green List also added Shiba Inu in November, putting it in the same category as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Despite these wins, Shiba Inu's price is still down 94% from its all-time high set in 2021 and down by 60% over the past 12 months. The token has less upside than might be thought, with fans speculating it could reach $0.01, which would give it a market cap of more than double the value of the entire crypto market.
