Shiba Inu's $3 Billion Valuation Hinges on Speculation, Not Real-World Use
Shiba Inu (SHIB) has become a multi-billion-dollar cryptocurrency by mimicking Dogecoin's dog-meme formula, rather than solving any technical problem. As of September 15, 2026, SHIB trades near $0.0000049 with a market cap of approximately $2.87 billion, according to Coingecko data.
The project was launched in 2020 by pseudonymous creator Ryoshi, who pitched it as a dog-themed token that could outdo Dogecoin by adding decentralized finance features Dogecoin never had. Ryoshi planned five linked tokens: SHIB, BONE, LEASH, TREAT, and SHI. Three of these tokens are live today, but SHI remains undeveloped.
Despite its massive circulating supply and lack of real-world use, Shiba Inu's market cap has grown significantly. The token's all-time high was $0.00008616, set on October 28, 2021. However, its current price is roughly 94% below that peak.
The project's infrastructure includes four separate pieces of technology: Shibarium, a layer-2 network; the Shib Alpha Layer, a layer-3 network built for 'rollup abstraction'; BONE, the governance and gas token; and the Doggy DAO, which is actually four separate DAOs. However, none of these have replaced speculation as the main driver of SHIB's value.
