Shiba Inu's Tokenomics and Burn Mechanisms Drive Demand
Shiba Inu, a meme cryptocurrency launched on the Ethereum blockchain in August 2020, has a unique tokenomics system. The project started with a total supply of one quadrillion tokens. Half of those tokens went directly to Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin's public wallet.
The largest single burn event occurred in May 2021, when Buterin destroyed approximately 410 trillion tokens, permanently removing roughly 41 percent of the entire token supply. This event alone accounted for the vast majority of all SHIB tokens ever burned.
Since its launch, the Shiba Inu team has expanded the project beyond its original meme coin identity. Shibarium, a dedicated layer 2 network, launched publicly in August 2023 and has processed approximately 612.8 million transactions to date across its network.
The ongoing burn mechanism will continue reducing supply, though the pace of community burns remains modest compared to the 2021 Buterin event. The Shiba Inu team continues developing Shibarium's infrastructure and plans additional ecosystem token launches throughout 2026.
