Silicon Valley Divided on Ban of Chinese AI Models
Silicon Valley is split over whether to ban Chinese AI models from American soil.
The controversy centers around Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model released on July 16 that has been matching or beating outputs from Anthropic and OpenAI in long-horizon reasoning and coding tasks.
White House officials have accused Moonshot AI of illegally distilling models from US firms like Anthropic and accessing restricted Nvidia GB300 chips, which could lead to sanctions and potential placement on the Entity List.
However, over 200 startups, including members of Y Combinator's network, signed a letter opposing an outright ban on Chinese AI models, citing their cost-effectiveness.
Chinese AI models have captured over 30% of US developer token usage since February 2026, with some companies like Coinbase reportedly cutting their AI spending by approximately 50% after transitioning to these cheaper models.
