Singaporean Man Pleads Guilty in $245M Crypto Theft Scheme
A Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to his role in a massive cryptocurrency theft operation that netted over $245 million. Malone Lam, 22 years old at the time of the charges, admitted to helping lead an international network that exploited trust rather than technical vulnerabilities.
The group targeted victims through deception, gaining access to their private information and converting it into cash for a lavish lifestyle. Prosecutors said Lam's associates spent nearly $500,000 on nightclub services in one evening alone and purchased luxury watches, handbags, expensive vehicles, and high-end rental properties.
Lam used several aliases during the operation, including 'Anne Hathaway,' '$$$,' and 'King Greavy.' He now faces up to 20 years in prison after being charged alongside Jeandiel Serrano in 2024. The case highlights the growing trend of criminal groups exploiting trust to steal digital assets.
The investigation has expanded, with authorities uncovering additional participants and charging another defendant, Evan Tangeman, for money laundering in April. Lam's next status hearing is scheduled for December 8.
