Singaporean Man Pleads Guilty to Leading $260M Crypto Theft Ring
A Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to leading a cryptocurrency theft ring that stole over US$260 million from victims in the United States. Malone Lam, 22, admitted to organizing a sophisticated 'social engineering' operation that targeted people with large Bitcoin holdings.
Lam and his co-conspirators impersonated employees of trusted companies, including Google, to persuade victims to disclose sensitive information such as passwords, seed phrases, and authentication codes that unlocked their digital wallets. This allowed the group to access the stolen cryptocurrency and direct further attacks.
The Department of Justice considers this case its first Bitcoin-related case brought under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Lam faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
