Singaporeans Lose Nearly $200k to Apple Impersonation Scams
Singapore's police have reported at least five cases of Apple impersonation scams within two weeks, resulting in losses of nearly $200,000 in cryptocurrency assets.
The scam involves pop-up notifications on users' Apple devices claiming unauthorized attempts to access their accounts or prompting them to change their Apple ID password.
Victims would then receive unsolicited calls from conmen posing as Apple's technical support team. The scammers would direct victims to fraudulent websites, such as chat-apple.com and case-apple.com, to provide sensitive information, including their Apple ID credentials, cryptocurrency account credentials, and one-time passwords.
The police warn that Apple will never ask users to provide their login credentials through unsolicited phone calls or online links. They advise victims to contact their cryptocurrency service provider immediately if they suspect their account has been compromised.
