Smaller Crypto Funds Struggle as Hashdex Closes Bitcoin ETF
Hashdex announced it will close its Bitcoin ETF (DEFI) after failing to attract sufficient investor demand. The fund, which currently holds approximately 225 BTC and manages $14.26 million in assets, has struggled with low trading activity and higher management fees.
The challenge for DEFI was not a lack of interest in Bitcoin ETFs, but rather competition from larger funds. According to Stockanalysis.com, only 46 crypto-related ETFs have surpassed $100 million in assets, while the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) account for over $57 billion.
The closure of DEFI reflects a broader trend across the crypto ETF market: smaller funds are struggling to compete with larger competitors. The ability to survive increasingly depends on scale, liquidity, fees, and investor recognition.
