These devices connect to smartphone apps, tracking every puff taken by users and dispensing points, free refill cartridges, or even cryptocurrency for continued use.

Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center warn that this fusion of addictive substances with financial incentives and artificial intelligence represents a novel public health threat. They argue that regulators and clinicians must confront these products now, before they become entrenched in the vaping landscape.

The devices, such as Puffpaw and Gudtrip, pair physical vapes with smartphone apps that monitor user behavior and convert it into redeemable value. This design contradicts established addiction treatment principles, which aim to help patients discover rewards not connected to substance use. Instead, these devices layer additional reward onto an already powerfully rewarding behavior.

The neuroscience underlying this concern is straightforward: nicotine and cannabis activate the brain's reward circuitry, reinforcing repeated use. Vaping may intensify this reinforcement loop because it allows users to take individual puffs throughout the day, each engaging the reward system and weaving habits into daily routines.
