SMBB Nikko Joins Forces with Uniswap for Regulated Japanese DeFi Gateway
SMBC Nikko Securities, a major securities firm in Japan, is partnering with Uniswap to create a decentralized finance (DeFi) gateway that meets regulatory requirements. The goal is to provide eligible investors in Japan access to DeFi products within a framework recognized by regulators.
The partnership involves SMBC Nikko leading regulatory engagement and supplying compliance expertise, while Nethermind takes the technical side, including AI development and smart-contract security. Uniswap Labs brings its protocol and v4 hook architecture, which will be used to embed anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) measures into the compliant pools.
The DeFi Gateway is a product of SMBC Nikko's DeFi Technology Department, established in February 2026. The project aims to create a liquidity-provisioning protocol with custom liquidity pools built to meet regulatory compliance requirements. Regular updates will be provided to Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) as the gateway takes shape.
The success of this initiative depends on several factors, including smart-contract security holding up and AI and compliance tooling working as intended. If successful, it could set a precedent for regulated investors interacting with decentralized infrastructure more directly.
