SoFi Deploys Deposit War Chest as Fintech Turned Bank
SoFi Technologies has made significant strides in its transformation from fintech to bank, securing a national bank charter in February 2022 through its acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp.
This move allowed SoFi to attract consumer deposits and use that capital to fund loans directly, rather than relying on securitized debt and warehouse credit facilities as it did previously.
The company's deposit base has grown from $1.2 billion in March 2022 to approximately $45.5 billion by the end of Q2 2026, a roughly 33-fold increase in four years.
This significant growth in deposits has given SoFi more flexibility in managing its loan portfolio and provided a buffer against credit market volatility, allowing it to maintain a net interest margin of 5.94% in Q1 2026.
