Solana Achieves 350ms Slot Time Target: Next Stop, 300ms?
Solana's mainnet has achieved a new milestone by reducing its target slot time to 350 milliseconds. This change is part of the proposal SIMD-0525, which aims to gradually decrease the slot time from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds in four stages.
Jacob Creech, VP Tech at the Solana Foundation, confirmed that this is the first time the network has officially reduced its target slot time since launch. The next goal is to reach 300 milliseconds.
Solana's protocol uses a leader election system where validators take turns processing transactions and generating blocks within a designated time frame called a slot. By reducing the slot time, the network can process more transactions per second, leading to faster transaction times.
The current reduction is the first step in achieving the goal of 200 milliseconds. The Solana Foundation stated that this change is not solely focused on improving processing power but also aims to reduce the time a single leader can monopolize block construction. By shortening slot times, the network's resistance to censorship will improve.
The SIMD-0525 proposal outlines gradual changes in slot times: 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, then 300 milliseconds, 250 milliseconds, and finally 200 milliseconds. Each stage will be tested individually before moving on to the next one, with a focus on minimizing disruptions to the network.
