Solana Aims for 250ms Slot Time in September Upgrade
Solana is gearing up for its next major upgrade, which aims to reduce the mainnet slot time from 300ms to 250ms. The upgrade is part of the SIMD-0525 plan, a staged process designed to gradually decrease transaction latency. According to Anza, the development firm behind Solana's Agave validator software, the 250ms feature is now pending on mainnet-beta.
The change will allow the network to produce new slots more frequently, with the potential to create up to five slots per second at the eventual 200ms target. This could improve confirmation speed and trading efficiency for applications such as oracle consumers and automated market-making systems. The upgrade is expected to become effective around 05:01 UTC on September 18.
Solana has already made progress in reducing its slot time, starting from 400ms to the current 300ms. The next step will bring the interval between slots down to 250ms, with the final stage aiming for a 200ms target. The network's recent transaction activity highlights the scale at which its infrastructure is operating.
