Solana Aims for Lightning-Fast Transactions with Alpenglow Upgrade

Solana is pushing the boundaries of blockchain speed with its Alpenglow upgrade. This overhaul replaces the existing consensus system, reducing transaction finality time from roughly 13 seconds to a blistering 0.15 seconds.

The change centers on a new voting protocol called Votor, which allows validators to exchange votes directly and finalize blocks in just one or two rounds. This eliminates the lengthy on-chain vote accumulation process used by TowerBFT, Solana's current consensus system.

The Alpenglow upgrade has undergone extensive testing on a dedicated small-scale network before moving to Solana's public testnet. Validators must use Agave 4.3, Solana's flagship validator software, to participate in the test.
