Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Sets Sights on 100-150 Millisecond Transaction Finality
Solana's upcoming Alpenglow upgrade is set to significantly improve network performance by targeting transaction finality of just 100-150 milliseconds. The upgrade, developed by Anza, will replace several components of Solana's existing consensus system with a new architecture built around Votor and Rotor.
The current system uses Proof of History (PoH) alongside Tower BFT, but Alpenglow will remove PoH from the consensus path and replace Tower BFT with Votor. The upgrade also introduces Rotor as a replacement for Solana's existing Turbine block-propagation system.
The goal is to make the process of reaching consensus significantly faster and more efficient. One of the biggest changes concerns finality, which currently takes roughly 12.8 seconds under the existing architecture. Alpenglow targets a drastic improvement of over 100-fold, with deterministic finality of between 100-150 milliseconds.
The upgrade also moves validator voting off-chain and uses BLS signatures to aggregate votes into certificates. This approach is designed to make Solana's consensus process both faster and less resource intensive. For users, the potential result is straightforward: more block space for applications, trading, and payments while reducing the amount of network capacity dedicated to consensus overhead.
