Solana Block Capacity Surges 66% with SIMD-0286 Upgrade
Solana's network has undergone a significant upgrade that increases its block capacity by 66%. The update, known as SIMD-0286, took place on July 29, 2026, during Epoch 1009. This expansion raises the maximum block compute units from 60 million to 100 million.
The increased capacity is expected to improve throughput for high-volume use cases such as DeFi and payments. According to Lucas Bruder of Jito Labs, who authored the upgrade, the writable account compute unit cap remains at 12 million CUs, and the maximum block data size delta stays at 100 MB.
The upgrade is a result of months of development and testing. It went through testnet and devnet trials before landing on mainnet, which is the standard cautious path for changes this significant. This surgical approach ensures that more room per block can be allocated without requiring any changes to existing applications or slot timing.
The network's ability to adapt and improve is crucial, especially given its recent growth. Approximately 11% of blocks were already approaching the previous ceiling during peak demand periods. The upgrade also builds on a prior step, SIMD-0256, which raised the compute limit from 50 million to 60 million in July 2025.
