Solana Cuts Block Time by Half in Ambitious Performance Boost
Solana has started reducing its block time, aiming to reach 200 milliseconds. The first step in this process involves halving the current block time from 400 milliseconds to a more competitive level. This move is expected to significantly boost Solana's performance and make it faster than other major networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The rollout of this update will occur in four stages, with each stage reducing the block time by 50 milliseconds. The network has already reached 96.7% of stake running the required software for the upgrade, but some validators have paused the sequence due to concerns about skipped blocks. Solana's co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko compared this pace to a previous update from 800ms to 400ms.
As a result of these changes, Solana will be able to produce new blocks every fifth of a second, increasing its block rate by nearly twice that of Ethereum. However, the network's reliability remains an open question due to past issues with network halts and slow adoption of urgent patches.
