Solana Cuts Slot Time, Boosts Block Speed by 17%
Solana's blockchain network has accelerated its block processing time by 17% after reducing its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This change will allow validators to add blocks more quickly, but won't increase total transaction capacity.
The faster clock will give wallets and exchanges a more up-to-date view of the network, with each leader's control window decreasing from 1.2 seconds to one second. This is crucial for applications like oracle-powered markets and automated market makers, where even a few hundred milliseconds can affect transaction execution.
Despite the increased speed, the network's wall-clock processing ceiling remains roughly unchanged due to the reduction in computation and data permitted in each slot under SIMD-0525. The change is part of a three-stage rollout that has brought Solana's slots from 400 milliseconds down to 250 milliseconds so far.
