Solana Cuts Slot Time in Half Ahead of High-Stakes DeFi Push
Solana is gearing up for its next performance upgrade, which will bring the network's slot time down to 250ms. This move is part of a staged plan called SIMD-0525, aimed at reducing transaction latency and supporting high-performance applications. The current mainnet slot time is set to decrease from 300ms to 250ms around September 18 at epoch 1037.
The upgrade will allow Solana to produce new slots more frequently, with the network able to create a new slot roughly four times per second compared to its original 400ms setting. This could improve confirmation speed and trading efficiency for latency-sensitive applications such as oracle consumers and automated market-making systems.
As part of this upgrade, Anza, the development firm behind Solana's Agave validator software, has confirmed that the 250ms feature is now pending on mainnet-beta. The network has already moved from 400ms to 350ms and then to 300ms, with the next step bringing the interval between slots down to 200ms remaining under development.
Solana's recent transaction activity illustrates the scale at which its infrastructure is already operating, supporting higher performance as activity expands. The upgrade arrives alongside broader infrastructure improvements across Solana's validator and networking ecosystem.
