Solana Migrates to Alpenglow Consensus Protocol
Solana's developer network has migrated to Alpenglow, a new consensus protocol developed by Anza engineers. The migration marked a significant leap forward for the blockchain, with co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko commenting, 'You're not ready for this.'
The Alpenglow upgrade brings several key technological changes, including off-chain validator coordination through the Votor voting system. This new system replaces the TowerBFT algorithm and is designed to improve performance and fault tolerance.
One of the main improvements introduced by Alpenglow is a reduction in transaction finality times from roughly 12.8 seconds to between 100 and 150 milliseconds. The network's '20+20' fault-tolerance model ensures that it remains stable even if 20% of validators go offline while another 20% face attacks.
The upgrade is currently running on both devnet and testnet, with no confirmed date yet for mainnet-beta. Developers are testing the new protocol to ensure its stability and performance before integrating it into the live network.
