Solana Nears 250ms Slot Upgrade, Eyes Ultimate 200ms Target
Solana is gearing up to reach another major milestone in its quest for faster network performance. The blockchain's 250-millisecond slot upgrade, a key step towards achieving its ultimate goal of 200ms slots, is scheduled to go live on mainnet on September 18.
The upgrade is part of Solana's gradual effort to cut slot times from 400ms to 200ms in five stages. The current plan includes activating features at specific epoch boundaries: 250ms will take effect during epoch 1037, following activation at epoch 1035 and full implementation by epoch 1036.
The 250-millisecond slot feature is currently pending activation on mainnet-beta under the SIMD-0525 rollout process. Once activated, it will enable validators to generate more blocks within a given period, potentially improving transaction confirmation speeds and overall blockchain performance.
