Solana Network Almost Freezes as 29% Stake Offline Due to Routing Error
A recent incident on Solana's network has highlighted concentration and infrastructure risks for the blockchain. On August 12, a Teraswitch routing failure took nearly 29% of the network stake offline due to a stale default route left on a Miami edge router.
The outage caused significant disruptions, with skipped slots rising above 32%, non-vote transaction throughput falling below 300 per second from roughly 1,100-1,300, and about half an hour of delayed finality. Despite the incident, Solana's chain continued producing blocks.
Teraswitch later deployed provider-side hardening to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company also stated that additional route monitoring was still in progress to improve infrastructure diversity and observability.
