Solana Prepares for Quantum Threats with Phased Falcon Rollout

The Solana Foundation has unveiled plans to protect its network against potential quantum computing threats. According to the foundation, both Anza and Jump Crypto's Firedancer team have independently identified Falcon as the preferred post-quantum digital signature scheme.

Early implementations of Falcon are already underway, but the foundation emphasizes that any eventual migration to post-quantum signatures will be manageable and unlikely to affect performance in a meaningful way. The roadmap includes three phases: continued research into Falcon and alternative schemes, introducing post-quantum cryptography for new wallets if the threat becomes more immediate, and migrating existing wallets.

The foundation notes that quantum is still years away and that migration plans are well-researched and ready to deploy when needed. It also points to existing quantum-resistant work within the ecosystem, such as Blueshift's Winternitz Vault, a quantum-resistant cryptographic primitive that has been live on Solana for more than two years.
