Solana Prepares to Test 150ms Finality Upgrade
Solana is preparing to test its Alpenglow upgrade on its public testnet, which targets finality in approximately 150 milliseconds. The feature, assigned to Agave v4.3.0, is currently pending activation and has not been published with an activation epoch or date.
The upgrade will change how validators agree that a block is final, but it does not affect how smart contracts execute, balance calculations are made, or users submit ordinary transactions. Alpenglow introduces Votor, a replacement for the voting process used by Solana's current TowerBFT consensus system, allowing validators to exchange votes directly and combine them into certificates showing enough stake has approved a block.
The test will focus on migration, observed speed, network delays, infrastructure delivery, and client readiness. Even if the testnet result is successful, it does not guarantee identical performance on mainnet, as validator participation, stake distribution, and network traffic can differ between the two environments.
