Solana Price Surges as Alpenglow Upgrade Looms
Solana's price surged to around $122 on Friday afternoon, reclaiming the $120 level it had slipped below on Thursday. The Solana mainnet is set to undergo a significant upgrade with the activation of Alpenglow, a consensus upgrade that will replace the current Proof of History and TowerBFT mechanisms with Votor and Rotor.
Jump Crypto, the developer of the Firedancer client, has announced that it will end support for the hybrid client Frankendancer with the launch of Alpenglow. This means that validators running on Frankendancer will need to migrate to the full Firedancer client or the Agave client to remain operational.
According to Cryptobriefing, the Firedancer family's share of total Solana stake is around 14-26 percent, with the full Firedancer alone accounting for roughly 11-14 percent. Validators that fail to migrate to the full Firedancer client or Agave will drop out of consensus and earn no rewards.
The activation of Alpenglow is expected to improve the network's finality, with the new voting mechanism allowing for faster block creation and a shorter epoch length. The current inflation rate is 3.62 percent, with the entire share flowing to validators, and the minimum stake for profitable validators is expected to fall from 4,850 to around 450 SOL.
