Solana Slashes Slot Time to 350 Milliseconds
Solana's mainnet has successfully reduced its slot time to 350 milliseconds, marking the first such reduction since the network's launch. This change took effect at epoch 1020 and is part of a four-step plan to reach a 200-millisecond target.
The Solana Foundation announced this development in June, outlining a staged plan with each step gated separately to allow operators to pause the sequence if block skip rates climbed above acceptable levels. Testnet took the first 350-millisecond step on August 5 and is now running at an effective 200-millisecond target.
Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza, confirmed that testnet slot times had already reached 182 milliseconds, with explorer data showing a 193-millisecond average over the preceding hour. Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius, predicted that shorter slots paired with a higher block limit would quadruple network throughput in the near term.
Solana validators will face tighter timing margins as their window narrows to 1.4 seconds from 1.6 seconds. This change may pose challenges for off-chain software, which still treats the 400-millisecond slot as a fixed number rather than a value read from the cluster.
