Solana Speeds Up Block Processing by Nearly 17%
Solana's blockchain network has accelerated its block processing time by nearly 17% after reducing its target slot time to 250 milliseconds from 300 milliseconds.
This change is expected to give applications a faster and more current view of the network, potentially reducing failed or poorly priced trades. The nearly 17 percent speed increase does not raise overall transaction capacity, however, because each slot is now allowed to carry proportionally less computation and data.
The faster clock reduces each leader's control window from 1.2 seconds to one second, handing transaction-ordering power to the next validator sooner. This matters for applications such as oracle-powered markets and automated market makers, where stale prices or a few hundred milliseconds of uncertainty can affect whether a transaction executes as intended.
The speed increase is part of a rollout that has taken Solana from 400-millisecond slots to 350, 300, and now 250 milliseconds. The next step could be a reduction to 200 milliseconds, which would produce five slots per second and shorten epochs to about 24 hours.
