Solana Stuck in Neutral as Bitcoin Dominance Holds
Solana's price has been hovering around $73, but it's not necessarily a breakout yet. According to recent data, Solana still needs Bitcoin to cede more market share before this move can be considered a clean turn.
At the moment, SOL is trading near $73.02 on CoinGecko, with a market cap of around $42.3 billion and a 24-hour volume of about $1.46 billion. Coinbase shows a slightly higher price at $74.60 and roughly $1.41 billion in 24-hour volume.
While Solana has been gaining traction, the chart still looks more like a test than a confirmed breakout. In fact, calling this an altcoin breakout is too early, as Bitcoin still dominates the market with around 56.4% of its share.
The institutional story around Solana did receive a boost in late July with the launch of the Morgan Stanley Solana Trust, trading as MSOL on NYSE Arca. However, the product has only managed to attract $1 million in assets under management and roughly $465,500 in 24-hour volume.
Despite this, Solana's network activity remains strong, with Jupiter Lend crossing $2 billion in market size in May and Bitwise Asset Management depositing over $260 million into an isolated USDe lending market on Jupiter. The staking participation is also high, with around 67.67% of eligible supply staked.
However, there's a catch, the network activity needs to feed back into SOL itself for it to prove its worth. As 21Shares noted in its 2026 Solana outlook, much of the economic value from Solana activity accrues to applications, while protocol-level value capture remains limited.
