Solana Surge Not a Sign of Rotation Into Altcoins
Solana's price surged by over 10% on September 18, significantly outperforming Bitcoin's 5.9% gain. This led many to speculate about a rotation of capital into altcoins.
However, upon closer inspection, the data suggests that this was not a true rotation. Instead, the market-wide rally was driven by simultaneous central bank actions and a short squeeze in the crypto market.
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16, followed by the Bank of Japan's rate hike to 1.25% on September 18. This weakened the yen and drove capital into dollar-denominated assets, including Bitcoin and other cryptos.
Solana's price was also boosted by its network upgrade, which improved network speed by about 17%. As a smaller market cap asset, Solana is inherently more susceptible to larger price swings from the same volume of buy orders.
