Solana Surpasses Coinbase and Kraken in Trading Volume
The traditional hierarchy of cryptocurrency trading volume is shifting as Solana's decentralized exchange (DEX) ecosystem surpasses that of Coinbase and Kraken in spot asset volume.
For most of crypto's history, Binance has held the top spot, followed by a handful of centralized exchanges. However, Solana's DEX activity has been consistently outpacing its competitors, with $7.19 billion in weekly volume during the week of June 12-18, surpassing Coinbase's $6 billion and Kraken's $4 billion.
Solana's underlying technical architecture, combined with meme coin activity and tokenized equities, is driving this surge in volume. The blockchain's low fees and fast settlement make it an attractive platform for high-frequency trading and speculation.
As a result, both Coinbase and Kraken have taken note and integrated access to Solana's DEX ecosystem within their own applications. While Binance still maintains its dominance with $34.39 billion in weekly volume, the direction of travel is clear: decentralized exchanges are gaining ground on centralized ones.
