Solana Testnets Alpenglow Upgrade: Fast-Track Transaction Settlement

Solana's long-awaited Alpenglow upgrade is now live on its public testnet, marking a significant milestone in the blockchain's quest for near-instant transaction settlement.

The upgrade aims to slash the time it takes for a payment to become irreversible from roughly 12.8 seconds down to just 150 milliseconds, a change that would have far-reaching implications for real-world payments and trading infrastructure.

At the heart of Alpenglow is a swap of Solana's consensus engine, replacing the current TowerBFT system with a new voting protocol called Votor. This structural shortcut allows validators to settle on a block after just one or two rounds, rather than building up a long chain of on-chain votes.
