Solana Triples Transaction Size Limit to 4,096 Bytes

Solana's mainnet has activated an upgrade that triples the maximum size of transactions from 1,232 to 4,096 bytes. This change is expected to benefit complex operations such as zero-knowledge proofs, multisignatures, and new on-chain signature systems.

The old limit of 1,232 bytes dates back to Solana's beginnings when transactions had to fit within a network packet of 1,280 bytes, with 48 reserved for headers. The migration to QUIC has made this constraint less relevant.

The new v1 format is optional and does not replace the old formats. Legacy and v0 formats remain usable, but applications that want to benefit from the increased space must use the new format.
