Solana Unveils Alpenglow on Testnet in Bid to Boost Efficiency
Solana has begun rolling out Alpenglow on its testnet, marking an important step in the network's plan to replace TowerBFT with a faster and more efficient consensus mechanism.
Alpenglow is designed to achieve finality of around 150 milliseconds, compared to the current 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT. The upgrade will also introduce Votor, which replaces vote transactions with direct votes between validators, reducing the wait for an irreversible transaction by about 99%.
The rollout on testnet is a crucial milestone before Alpenglow advances to devnet and eventually mainnet-beta. Validators and infrastructure providers must adjust their systems to accommodate the new consensus mechanism.
Solana's SOL token has been trading around $117 as of press time, nearing its January highs after a 25% gain over the past month. The network's decentralized exchanges recorded 208 million individual spot trades in the week ending Sept. 13, outperforming traditional exchanges like NYSE and Nasdaq.
With Alpenglow on testnet, Solana is taking another step towards becoming a more efficient and scalable blockchain platform.
