Solana Whale's 20x Bet Sparks Liquidation Fears Amid Derivatives Disconnect
Solana's derivative market is experiencing a disconnect from its falling prices, with a significant increase in leveraged coins being traded despite a decline in USD-denominated Open Interest (OI). OI currently sits at approximately $4.04 billion, down from about $7.70 billion last year, a decrease of around 47.5%. Meanwhile, the number of SOL held as leverage has increased by nearly 21.6% compared to last year and risen by 9.38 million to reach 52.87 million SOL.
This divergence suggests that derivatives have not experienced the broad deleveraging implied by dollar figures alone. Traders are maintaining large amounts of leverage relative to their holdings in coins, which may create an environment where price movements become even more volatile due to increased sensitivity to leverage. Without significant spot buying pressure, this could lead to further volatility.
Adding to these concerns is a recent large directional bet by a whale, who deposited $8.43 million in USD Coin (USDC) before targeting a 500,000 SOL long position using 20x leverage. The TWAP order has filled 199,838 SOL worth roughly $15.2 million at an average entry price of $75.985, leaving the position slightly underwater by around $8,888.
