Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade: Aiming for Sub-Second Finality
Solana is gearing up for one of its biggest updates, as it prepares to launch Alpenglow, a new consensus system designed to significantly cut finality times. The update aims to reduce finality from around 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds, making transactions effectively irreversible almost instantly.
The upgrade, which is currently in public testnet testing, will use Votor, a voting mechanism that allows validators to send votes directly to each other and combine them into cryptographic certificates showing agreement on a block. This process can finalize a block after just one voting round, leading to the targeted 150ms finality time.
The benefits of this upgrade are significant for exchanges, bridges, and financial institutions, which require strict confirmation and finality times before considering transactions irreversible. With Alpenglow, these entities will be able to treat transactions as final much sooner, reducing the risk of transaction reorganization or conflicting state.
