Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Enters Public Testnet Phase
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade has begun its public testnet migration, aiming to achieve consensus finality in under 150 milliseconds. This is a significant improvement over the current TowerBFT system, which takes approximately 12.8 seconds. The upgrade targets faster transaction settlement and validation.
The first phase of the public-testnet migration focuses on introducing Votor, a new consensus-facing component that replaces on-chain vote transactions with direct validator votes and aggregate certificates. This is a crucial step towards achieving the desired finality threshold.
The Solana Foundation has published the Alpenglow consensus proposal, which outlines the conditions for finalization based on stake participation. According to this proposal, 80% of validators must participate in one voting round to enable fast finalization, while 60% across two rounds provide a slower route.
