Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Smashes Finality Target on Testnet
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade has successfully landed on testnet, achieving an impressive median finalization time of just 54 milliseconds. This is a significant improvement over Solana's mainnet, which currently takes around 12.8 seconds to reach finality.
At the heart of this upgrade is Votor, a new consensus mechanism that replaces TowerBFT, the voting system Solana has relied on since its launch in 2020. Votor moves voting off the chain by allowing validators to exchange BLS-signed votes directly with one another over a peer-to-peer network.
The design target for finality was 100-150 milliseconds, but the testnet result of 54 ms landed well under the low end of that range. The upgrade also introduces dual finalization paths and a '20+20' fault-tolerance model, which is expected to improve network resilience and performance.
The activation date for Solana's mainnet remains undecided, tied to the Agave 4.3 release in late September or October. Observers will be watching closely to see if testnet and devnet runs reveal any issues that could delay mainnet activation.
