Solana’s highly anticipated Alpenglow upgrade has officially launched, marking the network’s most significant overhaul since 2020. The upgrade aims to drastically reduce transaction finality from roughly six seconds to about 150 milliseconds by shifting validator voting off-chain. This change is expected to make trading and payments on Solana feel more instantaneous, similar to centralized exchanges.
The upgrade introduces a new system where validators bundle their votes into certificates, allowing transactions to be settled in just one or two rounds. If successful, this could make Solana transactions irreversible in less time than it takes to blink. The upgrade also cuts validator costs by about 60%, replacing variable vote fees with a flat entry charge of 0.8 SOL per epoch.
The path to this launch wasn’t without challenges. The test network underwent six restarts, and one migration attempt failed network-wide before being successfully rolled back. Despite these setbacks, the mainnet activation is set for epoch 1064, with the actual change occurring at slot 459,653,000 after a 5,000-slot transition.
Solana’s focus on speed has made it a popular choice for memecoin trading, stablecoin payments, and on-chain exchanges. The Alpenglow upgrade is expected to further enhance its appeal by reducing the time it takes for transactions to be confirmed, bringing it closer to the efficiency of centralized exchanges.
