Solana's Blockchain Nears Freeze Due to Routing Failure
Solana's blockchain nearly came to a grinding halt after a routing failure caused approximately 28.83% of its staked SOL tokens to go offline, putting it just five percentage points away from a full network freeze.
The incident exposed the network's vulnerability to validator concentration and backup failures. Solana is designed with safety measures that pause block production in case of inconsistent transactions. However, this event raises questions about the lack of slashing penalties for validators, which may reduce their incentives to prevent downtime and impact staking rewards for token holders.
The Solana team has announced an upcoming upgrade called Alpenglow aimed at improving safety by pausing block production rather than risking inconsistent transactions.
