Solana's Price Surge Hits Crossroads Ahead of Crucial Upgrade
Solana's price has increased by 68% in just two months, bringing it close to breaking even for the year. The cryptocurrency reached a price of $124 as of September 27, 2026, with most of its growth happening in August and September. Solana outperformed both Bitcoin and Ethereum in the past month, but rapid rallies often attract momentum traders who can exit just as quickly as they arrive.
The SEC's announcement on tokenized stocks on September 17 coincided with Solana's rise, which is an area where Solana is a leader among blockchains. However, Solana still trades far below its January high of $149 and has experienced a significant drop of 40.5% over the past year.
A critical technical upgrade called Alpenglow, set to begin rolling out on September 28, aims to dramatically reduce transaction confirmation times from around 12.8 seconds to just 150 milliseconds. However, the launch date is tentative since it requires 95% of staked SOL to be running the new software.
For a sustained rally to occur, new money must flow into the crypto space or current holders must shift their assets into Solana. Fund inflows into Solana-related ETFs have cooled recently, with a staggering 96% drop in a single week in early September.
