Solana's Transaction V1 Upgrade Boosts Capacity Threefold
Solana has activated its Transaction V1 format on mainnet, more than tripling the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes. This upgrade allows developers to fit more instructions, signatures, and data into a single atomic transaction, reducing the need for complex operations to be split across multiple transactions.
The change affects transaction capacity, not transaction throughput or network speed, which remains unaffected by this update. The existing transaction formats remain usable but protocols must upgrade to the new v1 format to benefit from the larger size limit.
Solana has long been criticized for having a lower transaction data capacity compared to Ethereum, but this upgrade narrows that gap and makes it more viable for certain complex application types, including zero-knowledge proofs and multisignature corporate wallets. However, whether this will attract meaningful new developer activity remains to be seen and is likely to become clearer only over the coming months.
